Maurice grew up in Chicago and was educated at DePaul University. He explored a variety of professions but retired as a creative arts therapist and social worker specializing in harm reduction, helping countless individuals who were impacted by homelessness, trauma, substance abuse, mental illness, HIV/AIDs, and any combination thereof. He also served on the Board of Trustees for Open Studio Project, a community-based creative arts cooperative in Evanston, IL. In retirement, Maurice paints extensively.

Maurice was raised Baptist and Coptic but upon meeting Kim, Maurice explored several religions and settled on UUism, which he has been engaged with for more than 30 years. He has attended Prairie for seven years and has served on the Justice League, the Minister Search Committee, the COSM, and on the Board in the role of vice president.
